An uneditioned print of my drawing ‘Deliquesce’. The original was drawn on A5 paper, this print shows the image at the same size but is on A4 300gsm, coated paper.

The subject of this drawing is an ink cap mushroom in the middle of its deliquescence life cycle. At this point it deliberately starts to consume its own cap, starting at the edges. The gaps allow better airflow for the spores to spread. The goo attracts flies who also help to spread the spores. A particularly weird reproductive system.

In this drawing I wanted to convey the difficulty of mushroom hunting in an autumn woodland full of complicated shapes and shadows and colours. Even something as striking as an ink cap can be missed until you ‘get your eye in’.
