2020, 24x36 inches, oil, marble dust, charcoal, organic material on canvas. Framed.
The lurid green of the ditch is real, in the barren stubbled field it glowed evilly. The churned up swirling run-off from the ploughed field created a weird skin on the water's surface and even though the sky was overcast the field was edged by this emerald vein.
This piece took well over a litre of titanium white paint to build up the layers. Applying it like clay, carving it with palette knife and brush. I part-dried the paint for up to a week by squirting it onto piles of newspaper, then for the topmost layers I mixed in marble dust to provide texture. The canvas is so heavy it bounces off the support when you move it. The surface now consists of more marble dust, charcoal, pebbles, and pieces of twigs and dried crumbled plants, all adhered with thinned glue or pushed into the paint surface. I scarred the surface further with a scalpel and palette knife, pressed it with my fingers, it was a real hands on experience.
